The substrate of CP-Ti, also initial and thermally treated titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V were coated with hard 300 nm thick DLC coating. Thus, coating/substrate systems with different gradients of hardness were prepared. Large contact area between ball indenter and the studied surface enables the investigation of coating/substrate system at higher loads, which may be effective when studying thin coatings and its contribution to the mechanical properties of the substrate.
